Interestingly,
the game of Chinese checkers was not invented in China. It was invented
by a Swede.
Instructions:
Step I
On
heavy paper, lay out the grid for the hole locations. The sheet
should be about 16 inches square or so. It would be helpful if you
have a
drafting board, T-square, and 30-degree/60-degree triangle.
Step 2
Refer to the drawings for each step to locate the holes.
Draw
horizontal and vertical lines through the middle of the paper. At
the center,
draw a circle using a 6 15/16-inch radius. Divide the circle into
three equal
parts. Make a triangle with 12-inch sides. Make another triangle
(upside
down) with 12-inch sides. Divide each leg of both triangles into
1-inch
spaces. Draw parallel lines from point to point as shown. Where
the points
cross is the exact center point for each hole.
Step 3
Tape or glue your pattern to a piece of wood that is approximately
16 inches square. Be sure it cannot move. Using a prick punch, ice
pick or
similar tool, prick punch each of the 121 hole centers.
Step 4
Remove the pattern and locate the center hole. From this
point,
swing a 7 3/4-inch radius for the outside edge. Cut and sand the
outer edge.
Step 5
Using a 1/4-inch radius cove cutter with a ball-bearing
follower, make the cove cut around the upper, outer edge, as shown.
Step 6
Sand all over.
Step
7
Using a drill press and a 1/2 inch diameter drill with
a 3/16 inch deep setting, drill the 121 holes.
Step
8
Sand all over with fine grit sandpaper. Apply a high-gloss
coat of varnish.
Step
9
Optional: Glue a piece of felt cloth to the bottom
surface and trim along its edge.
Marbles or pegs can be used for pieces.
