Dovetail
Puzzle Instructions
The puzzle is made of two identical pieces. It is best to
make it out of two different kinds of hardwood. Walnut and
maple would be an excellent choice.
Step 1
Cut two blocks of wood to exactly 2 inches by 2 inches
and 4-3/4 inches long.
Step
2
Notch a dovetail as illustrated.
Step
3
Thin the dovetail to 1/8 inch thick as illustrated.
Step
4
Using the dovetail from one block, transfer the exact shape
to the other block. Using a sharp chisel, notch out the dovetail
1/8 inch deep, as shown.
Step
5
Round the top-inside edge of the dovetails, as shown.

Step 6
Add glue to both parts, and, using a wood vise, slowly press
the two pieces together. The dovetails will bend out and will
snap into place at the last moment. Clamp the dovetails tightly
in place until the glue sets.
Step
7
Sand all over.
Step
8
Apply a high-gloss finish, and when dry, lightly sand with
400-grit sandpaper. Apply a coat of paste wax.
Now show this to woodworking friends and ask them to make one just like it.
