Wall Shelf Free Project Plan

A cyma curve is a curve that turns back on itself. Many Early American designs are based on a cyma curve. This colonial shelf uses a cyma curve at the top and bottom. It has graceful lines. In laying out the sides, parts number 1, locate the compass swing points; set the compass at the given radius, and draw the outer shape.

Instructions

Step 1
Lay out the shape of part 1. Transfer the pattern to the wood, and cut out the piece. It is a good idea to tape or tack the two sides together when cutting and sanding so that both sides will be exactly the same size and shape. Sand all edges.

Step 2
Cut the two shelves and brace to size. Make the 1/8-inch-radius bead in the braces, parts number 4 and 5.

Step 3
(Optional)—Cut the plate groove, if you wish, approximately 1/4-inch to 3/8-inch wide and about 1/8-inch deep.

Step 4
Glue and nail the shelf together. Check that it is square.

Step 5
This project is usually stained but it could be painted to blend into any room setting.
